Gnome-Pie 0.5.2!

Gnome-Pie 0.5.2 fixes many bugs...

A new bug-fix-release of Gnome-Pie arrived! There are no new features in this version. But if it failed to work on your machine previously there is a good chance that it runs now flawlessly!

These evil insects have been eliminated (at least, I hope so!):

  • Hopefully Gnome-Pie crashes no more with an error in “pthread_setspecific” in Ubuntu 12.04. This is a really evil bug… we’ll see whether I got it!
  • Gnome-Pie now uses a monochrome tray icon with most window managers again. When used with Gnome-Shell it displays the application icon instead.
  • The icon for the window list slice group has been changed from “window-manager” to “gnome-window-manager”, as the latter exists in more icon themes.
  • The default icon, which is used when no appropriate icon for a slice was found, has been changed from “application-default-icon” to “stock_unknown” as the latter exists in more icon themes.
  • The new-slice-window does not crash anymore when the first slice type in the slice-type-list was selected.
  • Spanish locale has been updated.

Please report your feedback as usual!

    Hi there,

I love the program, and might even write a theme for it some time (the first one for anything ever, so you can imagine how enthused I am about this).

I do have a slight issue with the window slices. the maximize and minimize slices don’t work, and changing the shortcuts to the ones found in the system (I use Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome Shell) doesn’t help.

Might be something to look out for.

Keep it up, I think this will be big!

    • Simon says:

I tested it with this OS and for me it doesn’t work either. Default for minimizing is Ctrl-Alt-0 for me but pressing this combination does nothing (Gnome-Shell-Bug?).

So first of all we need to find a way to minimize/maximize windows by hotkey in Gnome-Shell. This hotkey will work in Gnome-Pie then as well…

      • Bram Kaandorp says:

Could well be a Gnome Shell bug. I’m not versed in coding, so I couldn’t figure it out (I wouldn’t know what to look for).

As for bugs, I think I found another one. When I drag and drop an icon from one slice to another, it doesn’t really work, because when I switch back to the previous slice, the icon is there again, even though the icon did stick to the next (but it’s gone afterwards). clicking on the transferred icon (whilst it’s still “transferred”, so before I look at the previous slice), the program crashes.

I hope I’m clear, because it’s not very easy to explain.

    Hi,

is it possible to limit the Applications which will show up if i click on main menu apps?

Reason is, i have way to much apps on my computer to let it srender fast enough. xD

    • Simon says:

Well, not really. At least not without recompiling the source code.

Probably you should create some pies with your most used applications? You can also create Pies with slices which open other Pies… so you may create some menu-like structure.

Another possibility is to edit your main menu directly (Alt-F2 “alacarte”) and remove the entries you don’t like. But they will also disappear from other places where your main menu is displayed!

      • Nando says:

Well.. i don’t want to delete the entries since i don’t always remember how it was called. xD I created some favourites. Nice thing. Thank you very much. :)

It would be nice if there would be an option in future releases. Something like “Show *number* entries” and for the other apps using mouse wheel or something else to scroll through. Just as a suggestion. :D

        • Simon says:

It’s very likely that I’m going to write my Bachelor thesis on this topic. If so, Gnome-Pie will advance in many aspects!

          • Nando says:

[germanmode] Na dann viel Erfolg. :D Bin gespannt, was noch alles dazu kommt. [/germanmode]

            Good luck. :)

I am absolutely addicted to gnome pie. It is one of the best features I have ever tried or seen. Outstanding job! Thanks ;)

Hi, thanks for a great launcher!

I have just upgraded to 0.5.3 (I am on Debian), and launcher no longer works. I have purged the package, removed the config and it worked again for 2 days…

    Here is what I get:
    $ gnome-pie
    [MESSAGE] Welcome to Gnome-Pie 0.5.3!
    [MESSAGE] Loading Pies from “/home/evgeny/.config/gnome-pie/pies.conf”.
[WARNING] Icon “application-default-icon” not found! Using default icon…
[WARNING] Icon “stock_unknown” not found! Will be ugly…
[MESSAGE] Error loading image file: Failed to open file ”: No such file or directory
[WARNING] Icon “gnome-session-halt” not found! Using default icon…
[WARNING] Icon “stock_unknown” not found! Will be ugly…
[MESSAGE] Error loading image file: Failed to open file ”: No such file or directory
    [MESSAGE] Started happily…
    Segmentation fault

    • Simon says:

There’s a little chance that this error is related to your icon theme… may you please change your system’s icon theme and try again? For example Faenza?

      • Evgeny says:

I installed Faenza and restarted the laptop (old windows habit :) )

Unfortunately, it didn’t wok. Now I get:

        $ gnome-pie
        [MESSAGE] Welcome to Gnome-Pie 0.5.3!
        [MESSAGE] Loading Pies from “/home/evgeny/.config/gnome-pie/pies.conf”.
        [MESSAGE] Started happily…
        Segmentation fault

        Icons look nice though… :)

      • Evgeny says:

I have upgraded to gnome-shell 3.4, purged gnome-pie, removed the config files, and installed it again. Added my pie into /home/evgeny/.config/gnome-pie/pies.con manually (to save time).

Everything works now. I will let you know if it breaks.

Thank you, it is a really great app launcher.

Superb! Pie (for me) is replacing Gnome-do and Dash in practically every way, except when I have to make verbal inputs.
I’m wondering though if it’s possible to set a range for mouse-click so that I can cancel choice or return to previous pies by clicking further off the pie – it might prevent accidental clicks too. I now have to click ‘ESC’ or go all the way back to the initial pie if I want to close it safely.
    Thank you! Great job!

      • Ting says:

        Ooops. I was dumb…
Also I’m experiencing a major lag if I go into a pie with around or more than 12 icons. I’m on 2G Ram and 2.2GHz, so… I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me. I seldom use those big pies though.
Also, is Chinese included in the Locales? I’d love to do something… So sad there’s no Gnome-pie alternatives on Windows. Hopefully your thesis will bring change to the future of menus!

          • Ting says:

            Hey Simon,
I’ve done the easier part of translating the strings. The issue now for me is the text-encoding. Whenever I compile the .po I get error messages like
zh_CN//LC_MESSAGES/zh_CN.po:21:10: /*some Chinese saying ‘null multi-char sequence’ or similar stuff*/
            zh_CN//LC_MESSAGES/zh_CN.po:21:11:
            zh_CN//LC_MESSAGES/zh_CN.po:21:12:
And I don’t know for sure what is causing this. Perhaps it’s because Chinese uses 16bit chars instead of the European 8bit? Anyway contact me if you want the file or anything.

        • Simon says:

You can try to adjust the encoding settings in the header of the *.po file. There are some lines like

          “Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8\n”
          “Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit\n”

          Maybe this helps?

          • Ting says:

Yeah I guess, I got it right afterall. I initially changed the encoding to GB18030, but it kept prompting errors, so I switched back to UTF-8 and it worked. Guess I just over-worried.
I’m doing some final checking in my Guest session, and after that hopefully I’ll send the gnomepie.mo over to you.

    Hi Simon,

To simplify my desktop, I set the show_indicator to false. But the problem is that it’s now hard to access the menu editor. It would be nice if you implement like:

    gnome-pie –show-menu-editor

    thanks :)
